Hi y'all,
I'm a shrink from NJ via California who digs in dirt as often as possible to keep sane. Currently on my annual 5 week trek through Southern Utah and environs. Heading out to the San Rafael Swell for the next 3 days and aside from the well known places, I 'd love any special tips anyone has. I collect just about everything, have a 4WD high clearance vehicle and am not meek when it comes to hiking and climbing.

Well sounds like your headed to a great area to collect....I expect to head that way in a week or two to try the same thing. There are trilobyte fee sites 40 miles west of Delta, UT and you would be close to the Topaz MT area as well. The ellusive red beryls and lots of other goodies in that region. That is what I know of offhand so far in my checking. Best of luck in your hunt & 'safe travels to you'. When you are back in NJ consider going to the Franklin, NJ fall show. Great show indoors and tailgate as well; lots of nice folks and great material. World capital of the fluorescent materials and richest mineral area, number wise in the world. Approx. 284 minerals have come out of that valley. The Sterling Hill Mine Museum is run by the Houck Bros. with a collecting area and the Franklin Mineral Museum also has a pit area for collecting. Which part of NJ are you located in?

I went out to Utah for the first time this summer to do the traditional tourist thing, but did get several days of collecting in mostly in the Thomas Range. But if you are in extreme southern Utah, stop by the St George BLM office. They have a map and directions to a private claim (Glitter Hole if I remember the name correctly) just across into Arizona (about 15-30 minutes from the office). It is loaded with beautiful display worthy Selenite. You can fill a bucket just surface collecting. The owner allows people to stop by, they just asked that we not fill our truck.
Getting to spend 5 weeks in Utah....HEAVEN!!
