The top one has a few shades of blue, and the bottom one is also blue but a very different texture.. I've looked through a rocks & minerals book but I couldn't find anything that matched. Any ideas would be appreciated! Attachments:

Just guessing here, but looks like a chert type of rock that most probably has been dyed that blue color making it hard to find another example of it to ID it from. They both look like the same stuff only the top one is more of the center of the rock and the bottom one has more of the exterior rind on it. Nice work, but I prefer the natural colors in rock. Joe

I didn't dye them, that was how I found them. I found a few others like it by a lake. I'm stumped!

I'm in southern New Jersey. I've found mostly obsidian and green fluorite, but I have 5 or 6 small pieces of what looks like cobden chert and a few pieces that look like the bottom one in the picture.

Very good, persephone, that's what we needed to know. You are most likely finding bits of "slag glass". Obsidian does not occur naturally east of the Mississippi, so either it's obsidian that has been thrown out by someone in the past or slag glass. Slag glass used to refer only to the by-product of iron smelting operations, but now includes intentionally made slag glass as well. Here's a link with a brief explanation and Google "Images of Slag Glass" for pics. www.glassencyclopedia.com/slagglass.htmlSlag glass is very popular these days. Joe
