Bad focus....Finding a decent amount of this. The snake head looking thing and the cratered looking rock in the prizes post all seem to have this speckled appearance, although this one is bumpier. Attachments:

I wouldn't call this "brecciated" and not a jasper at all, nichwhitt. The Garden Rose piece from your "Prize" post, with the long red rectangular pieces in the matrix, is a much better example. This stuff looks more like iron "slag" or a cinder type of thing. I have to wonder if it is natural or a by-product of some sort of smelting activity. The colors are from iron "irredescence"(sp?). You do have great Specular Hematite in your area, though this is not that either. Thinking more of something iron-ish here. Joe

Good to know. I will just have to work the other pieces I referenced and see how they turn out. They may or may not look like this inside. Seems to be all sorts of iron based rock in the area.

Would like to see some more pics of this one from different angles. And is it magnetic at all?

I'll try to post more pics of some of these...I have so many now, that they all just go in buckets with very little time for sorting, so its a matter of finding them. The other sides are smooth and the colored areas are waxy looking...will check if its magnetic as well.

I thought this the stone in this pic was the same, because of the red speckles, but under magnification, they seem different. This stone is smoother and waxyer, and I always find it without rough attached. Attachments:

Well, Nichwhitt, thanks for the pics. It does look like this stuff is closer to a brecciated jasper than some sort of iron stuff I was originally seeing. It is very hard to ID a specimen from a pic. Even harder if the rocks are water worn smooth like many of yours. That is why I am not even attempting to ID some of your other posts. They could be a lot of things. This a very pretty rock, might look good cut, but the clasts are a little too small and rounded for me to call it brecciated. Without knowing or seeing more of this I would have to simply call it a Clastic Rock.
