I'm a long-time rock collector, but recently have decided to make rock hounding a hobby of mine. I live in Brushy Fork (directly outside of Boone, NC) and have researched and investigated a lot of the local sites, however, most seem to be either closed or inaccessible (ie, private property). So far, I've looked into the Elk Knob mine (on State Park property so it requires a permit), Duncan Mine (it's a golf course now), Copper Knob/Gap Creek Mine (no trespassing), Cranberry Iron Mine (closed as a bat sanctuary), Ray Mica Mine (very picked over and has a designated digging area away from the main trailings heap), and Ore Knob Mine (closed due to environmental hazards). Does anyone have suggestions for sites that I could investigate? I'm a very adventurous and physically-fit person and love the thrill of finding a new site so long as I don't have to worry about being jailed or shot. Speaking of which, I have a slight problem when it comes to conversing with many of the locals around here (I'm originally from Bisbee, AZ)...I'm transgender (not exactly the most accepted thing out in the Bible Belt). So yeah... Anyways, I'd love for some help/advice regarding locations around here and am always looking for friends I hope to meet some of this amazing community in person one day.

Welcome to the forum, chumbungler. Since rocks are considered non-gender specific in the English language, and this is a discussion forum about rocks, there should be no problem with picking up rocks and rock information. I don't have any specific information for the Boone Area, but that is not far from a lot of well known spots.
