Kind of looks like Calcite to me...but I'm no expert, there are lots of others here that know way more than I do, but I like to take a stab at it once in awhile anyway...Coldwatergold

its a rock. it looks layered, kinda flaky looking and it is clear

Yup I would agree with coldwater, more than likely calcite, which is usually square or sheeted like that. however the best way to tell is if it scratches if so then it is if not then can be high grade quartz hard to tell from the picts tho.

yes it scratches. but everywhere i look it tells me calcite dissolves after time if not stored properly (or in a air tight capsule of some kind) and it taste like salt. i have had theses in my dark ,damp basement for over 20 years now just thrown in a box.

Calcite will not taste like salt and it will not dissolve unless it is emerged in a acidic solution. Keep looking you might find some calcite crystals that you will be proud to display.
