does anyone have any idea what this is? My mom found it this past weekend at a local flea market and it's driving us bonkers trying to figure out the correct name/id. Attachments:

carolyn....OK local flea market? but what part of which state? It helps. It is not bone, wood, fern, coral or coprolite. How does it feel to the touch? Slick, soapy, not as cold as a piece of quartz? I'm looking past the white pattern to the green colors and type of break in the material. My initial thoughts would be serpentine or opalite. Can you scratch or cut it with a sharp knife point? Does the white pattern seem to be on all the pieces or just that one?

Looks a lot like a Baculites specimen. Fossil from the upper Cretaceous. The one I have is from Montana but I have seen a bunch of them from South Dakota. I think that Baculites is a cephalopod but you could google it to find out for sure. Dan

wow! you guys are good!! Thank you Dan! My mom found this in a flea market in Marietta, Oh. It had a label on the bottom but no name. We think it was part of someone's collection but the seller didn't know anything about it. I think my mom paid about $7 for it .. we're really excited that someone identified it for us. Thank you again..
