1. For those of you who work with middle/high school-aged kids, they are taught both astronomy and geology in Earth Sciences. 2. Also, since our star (and us) are a third-generation (at least) solar system, we have minerals to look for in the first place. Gold, for example, can only form in the process of stellar supernova. Emeralds require that little dash of Chromium, etc. 3. Finally, we look out a the countless stars and might wonder: what would rock collecting look like on Mercury? Mars? Europa? Titan?
