Spent a little time following Tropical Storm Irene through New England earlier this month and doing a little collecting. I spent one day collecting on my own in Maine (Maine Feldspar Quarry), three days at the Poland Mining Camp (Bennett, Havey, and Mt Mica Quarries), and one at the Palermo Mine in New Hampshire. I ended up bringing 17 minerals home. Here's a sampling of the tourmaline specimens I found at the Havey Quarry in Maine. Elbaite in muscovite. The other end of this mica chunk has a rim of lavendar lepiodlite. Neat little spray of elbaite in muscovite. Terminated elbaite crystal. One of my favorites. Pocket material with quartz crystals, micro elbaite, and lepidolite and cookeite. The quartz crystals are studded with fluorapatite crystals. Elbaite crystal spray. Had a ball as usual and can't wait for a return trip next year. Steve

Almost through everything I hauled home from this trip. Working through the Palermo Mine stuff now. Hit twenty minerals, not counting varieties, with some sweet arsenopyrite crystals in "blue tourmaline eyes" from Mount Mica. Hope to post more photos soon.

Pegmatite, in addition to good crystal shape, such pretty combos of color.

Here's a few more favorites. Tourmaline with fluorapatite and albite. I love cleavelandite vugs! Everyone is a potential treasure chest. Terminated tourmaline Tourmaline and muscovite Tourmaline, fluorapatite, and lepidolite. Planning for next year. Steve

Steve, any idea when your going back up to Maine in 2012. Several years ago I tried going the same week as the group. I was asked to come up the following week. Had the quarries to myself. I't was still fun.

Too early to pick specific dates just yet, but I'm playing around with some different options. Hoping to play a role in a couple group trips in 2012 and at least one will be in the Northeast.

I will probably go the week after Peg Camp. Went twice before after peg camp. Both times the camp had very few attendees.
Would like to get back into the Pits Tenny Mine. It's one of the mines that know one ever find anything - because of complaints it is no longer scheduled at PMC. Five years ago I found several great cinnamon garnets, and I know that additional garnets are just waiting to be found.
