This came out of a pocket in some quartz in a quarry on in the NF here in Lane Co. Oregon, near the Bohemia Mining District. The rhombo structures are hollow. My guess is something after dolomite, but I don't know jack! Attachments:

The fact that they are hollow would indicate a good probability that a replacement process was involved, so yes a pseudomorph (or actually an epimorph, since its hollow) would seem correct. There are a few common rhombic minerals that it could be, such as dolomite, calcite, siderite, etc. Perhaps the suite of minerals found at the mine would give us some hints. I'm VERY impressed with the rockhounding you're doing out there. Keep it up! Makes me want to come to Oregon. (By the way, last time I saw Jack, he was hangin' out down at the liquor store)

Laurie, unfortunately this is from a long abandoned quarry waaay out in the mountains here, and there is no specific info on the minerals from there. I spent several hours scouring the site, and there is not much to be found. The only thing I found was a small quartz vein at the top of the workings with vugs in it. This was the only vug with these hollow casts. The rest are more similar to the growths in the background of the picture. It is about the color for siderite in person, well, at least all of the siderite I have seen from this area. You should come out to Oregon sometime. It is just starting to get worked over and minerals really searched out. Most folks only care about agates and petrified wood, which has left an immense amount of neat stuff for me to seek out. I'm really stoked on my mine. It should (and has) produce huge plates of huge crystals. I can't wait to spend a week opening it up. The results should be epic.

He does not know jack, so you have to introduce him. Nice find. And I did love the picture of the plate you found too.

I found Jack's nice handtooled leather belt with his name embrossed at a thrift store in Tennessee. Guess he was pretty hard up to part with his belt. Do any of the hollows appear to be carbonate/ stalactite type material, ie, fizzy when in acid?

rockshine, I dunno about reactions with acid as that piece is the only one. If I had more than one specimen I would test it, but don't have the heart to chance the only one...But no, they are simple little rhombs. The stalactite things in the background are solid, whatever they are
