Late question? Classes have different ideas, but most think it is like a bathtub and the water drained into the earth.
Thanks for your time in your reply.
The kids enjoy seeing the numbers of views and responses.

Godzilla lives underwater and can drink and purify sea water. He takes a massive gulp every so often. Hence...whirlpool. This time just coincided with the earthquake. (Sorry Colorado, I couldnt resist)

Ok ... I'm not a teacher... But! The going down the tub thing is off... What happened is the first big wave came in. Then as it was trying to go back out the next wave was coming in. As they passed and or pushed by each other, it created the vortex. Much like a tornado is formed as the cold and warm air are compressing passing by each other

I remember this from when I was a kid. Tidal bores in Nova Scotia at Reversing Falls could generate whirlpools. Tidal bores are closer a phenomenia to tsunamis than any other wave form I can think of. A search yielded this links, which can possibly help? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Sowwww.oldsowwhirlpool.com/

ColorShapeTexture explains this phenomenon quite succinctly. And the Basin / Hose analogy by Gsellis makes perfect sense. However, one last time, allow me to propose my deeply scientific and well thought hypothesis: (This is what really happened.)

I could not remember the reversal falls. I knew I had seen something like that a long time ago.
Thanks and remember he kids enjoy the replays. This is much better than "goggle"
