Okay, I've done martial arts for forty years, and have always wanted a real samauri sword, a real blade. Well, I got this one for a steal, at a tenth of what a blade should have cost, but that huge knife store in TN. was giving this last one away, and I was in the right place, at the right time. The only thing it lacked was a handle, so I thought, that's easy! Well, it wasn't! The eyes are emeralds of course, and the nostrils are black sapphires, the side has a teardrop ruby, and the other side has a spinel. I like it. And I'm only eighty percent done. It still needs the tusuba placed, and some cleaning up to do. Enjoy!

Nice job on that handle. Is the blade an old blade with a history? I'm curious about that because my father gave me a samauri sword he got when he was fighting in the South Pacific (1942-1945) pushing the Japanese out of the islands. The only things I do know about the sword is that the blade dates back to 1860's and the handle was fashoned for the WW II campaign. I believe the blades stayed in the families, only carried by officers, and the handles were redone for different wars. I was told that a knowledgeable person could tell me more about the rank of the officer that carried it from the colors, knots, and braiding. What is the best way to care for the blade? Attachments:

Great job, Tom! Looks like a heck of a project. Won't have to worry about those "barrs" messin' with you! Joe

That's okay, Arappaho, I "Barred" them long ago! The best way to care for the sword is the same way you would care for any steel, which is to keep is as dry as you can, and oil it very lightly when the need arises. The sword I bought is from Cas Hanwei and is new steel forged with processes that make the metal more pure than ever before, therefore stronger. I would love an original folded blade, but alas, they're extremely expensive. This blade is 65 Rockwell on the cutting edge down to 35 for the back of the blade. Nice blade you have there, Stonebuster! I hear from Cas that the new blades are actually stronger, but I don't know. I'm not going to smack it up to test it! It's a live blade for certain, you can feel its power just by holding it. Love and Light, T.
