I used Drew's link to go one further... www.erskine.edu/news/mineral.12.16.02.htmlNote: "In the July-August 1972 issue he describes the acquisition by the Smithsonian institution of two fine crystal groups (both pictured, pgs. 181-182). He further writes that
"A recent check disclosed that the owner of the locality has just filled the pit with rock. The property is supposed to be tied up in litigation and the owner definitely does not want anyone to visit it"which leaves the current status of the "mine" as "unknown"

After a google search, found the following: ....posted by Java Jun 1st, 2003, 06:34 PM on talk.livedaily.com/archive/index.php/t-271994-p-2.htmlSunday: Absolutely beautiful weather from sunrise to sunset - clear skies, breezy with plenty of sunshine, and temperatures getting into the 70's F. Well, for today's adventures - a road trip exploring Granville County to my north, all the way to the Virgina border and back. First I travelled northbound along backroads going through western Granville County, NC, stopping briefly by Bowling Mountain, which really wasn't much of a mountain but rather more of a high area in the midst of plowed fields and also some pastures nearby. Anyway, having got my fill of this area rather quickly and since I was fairly close (within 25 miles) to the Virginia border, I figured I'd continue northwards to re-visit the Blue Wing mine just south of Virgilina, Va. Anyway after parking at the Blue Wing babtist church and then following a heavily overgrown trail (which was where old railway tracks were pulled up years ago) just to the east of this church for several hundered yards northward to the old mine site which remarkably is still a clearing in this wooded area, I picked around the area a bit, collecting various pieces of copper bearing minerals from the old mine tailings and also took just a few pictures (like about 4). Anyway besides collecting a few copper bearing mineral specimens (malachite and bornite), I figured I'd take a closer look at what few remnants of structures there were which were still left there, etc. Three water filled vertical mine shafts all within about a hundred foot area. A fairly level area of mine tailings (except for piles around the open shafts) taking up an area of about 100 feet by 300 feet. A few 12" by 12" timbers made from old growth pine still left from the original mine structures. A pile of scattered antique bricks mostly hand-made, but none were intact, though what few were machine made had 'Pomona' embossed into them. (from California??? - History of Pomona, CA (http://www.wemweb.com/traveler/towns/25pomona/25histor/history.html) - note Pomona Brick (1873) in the 3rd paragraph) I discovered that Daisies can actually grow in those mine tailings, though not much else except small cedars as of yet. I may or may not have got a good photograph of a large black and blue butterfly upon the rocks as my shutter opened just as the butterfly was preparing to take flight again. Anyway, after this bit of exploration, photography, research and mineral collecting for about 2 hours duration while there, I figured it was time to start travelling southbound again. Well upon reaching Oxford, NC I then decided to venture southeastward along Hwy 96 out of Oxford in Granville County just exploring the countryside. I'll have to admit one thing, I think it's hay bailing time already as many of the fields of hay have been harvested and rolled into huge bails of hay, yet there's still some fields of hay left yet to be bailed in Granville County. Continuing southeastwards until I reached Hwy 56, I then decided to travel west until I reached Creedmoor, NC (still in Granville County), and from there I headed southbound on Hwy 50 into Wake County and homeward bound.
All in all it was a great day for just getting out on the backroads to just go cruising and exploring as the scenery looked like summer but felt very much like springtime, all under breezy clear blue skies.

OK - now that the question was raised, and we've got some info.... are either of these currently viable sites? Anyone... anyone....?

Round #1 at Blue Wing: There's green and blue everywhere! Someone left a bucket of good spx on the path toward the mine-thank you for assurance that I was on the right tail after all! I added a couple to it :> Question? Is there irridescent hematite/rutile at this location? I'll post an image later of the small (1 cm. or so) grouping. This is a micromounter's paradise! BTW, there is a large tree fall over the path about 20 feet prior to the mine entrance. Good landmark! Thanks, Joe for the site info, and thanks, Sharktoothhunter, for the research courtesy Java!

I have acquired both the Blue Wing mine in NC and the Seaboard in Virginia. Am willing to allow collecting with notice. Will be pumping the shafts out next spring 2012 so we can see what restoration might be required to access the stopes.

great to know about the Blue Wing! as for Due West, I had posted on here sometime in the last couple of years inquiring about it - from what I understood it IS filled and will not be opened again in the foreseeable future. who knows though, over time it may change owner hands, we can only hope - or pester the crap out of nearby landowners in hope the vein continued on!!
