I believe it is halite. Take a tiny chip and see if it dissolves in hot water, or leave it sitting out awhile and see if water droplets gather around the base. Or taste it and see if it's salty. If hyalite, you will need to store it in a very airtight container, preferably with some silica gel or other moisture absorber inside, otherwise it will turn to white wet powder and make an awful mess in your display case. Even if it seems stable for a month or more, it will eventually decompose.

I've had the piece for 6yrs just sitting on a shelf in my living room. I only recently learned it had a salty taste as one of my younger children told me.
It is a bit large. Around 6"-8". I looked online for airtight mineral cases or domes but couldn't find them.
