Help with Maine "Metamorphic" Mineral ID

I was swimming in a lake in Maine and found a large metamorphic rock (I've identified it as Gneiss with a key, although I could be mistaken) however this isn't what confuses me. On one of the cleaved edges of the rock is a small, flat surface upon which are clusters of a flat, shiny mineral that is golden in color and lustrous (it shines almost like a metal). There are also isolated, non-planar occurrences of this lustrous, golden mineral on the same, small surface of the rock. I'm wondering, could this be pyrite? What types of minerals like the one I've described form in Gneiss or other metamorphic rocks in Maine? Thank you for your assistance in identifying this mineral.

From the pics, which if you could try and get a better close up of the area in question, it looks like to me to be pyrite. Not unheard of in gneiss type rocks. Garnets as well. Hope this helps. Better pics would be great. That can be a challenge I know. I will check back to see if you post some clearer pics.
