finnally got to go on a little rock trip nice to take my youngest with, if I would have known that the park was so far in the middle of nowhere, I would have crossed over into NC. put we had a good time and that is all that matters, now to try and clean the crosses out.

Is that Fairy Stone State Park? I understand you can surface collect is that correct? Post your finds when you can. I keep meaning to get down there but *sigh* I keep having to do things like work and work and um...you get the idea

My understanding is that NO collecting of any kind is allowed on that park property. If they do allow collecting, the rules must have recently changed. As for removing the crystals from matrix, it is nearly impossible, unless they were found in a rotten saprolite. The rock is very, very hard. (I actually like them better in matrix anyway, but that's just me). If you find weathered matrix pieces, the crystals tend to stand out well and look good, but if you try to break the matrix to expose fresh crystals, they look like crap, with little contrast between the crystals and the matrix. There are private properties in the surrounding areas where collecting has been done in the past, but I'm not sure what the current status is of these places.

There is no collecting in the park proper but there is a little gas station called Heiners 57 where you can surface collect.
