I wanted to share some photos of nice color from our Spring Swap and Dig at Graves Mountain. Thanks again to Junior, Melissa, and Rick for all you do to keep our hobby going! A little about my discoveries.....I was in a kyanite seam mixed with hematite that ran very close to a substantial quartz vein. Where the kyanite and quartz intersected, I found abundant color in little vugs on the kyanite. The matrix was mostly a sugary quartz that made for easy digging, but also made some of the specimens fall apart once extracted. The best specimens came out from where the kyanite seam became more solid without quartz. Little tip for digging at Graves...Always follow the quartz when it runs with kyanite and hematite! See everyone at the amethyst dig! Jon ; For those who think there's no clear quartz crystals at Graves, check this little baby out. Found it in a collapsed quartz pocket. The clear crystals broke off and fused to the bottom pocket matrix. Too cool! ; ; ; This was the best find of the trip. An outstanding kyanite specimen covered with colorful hematite! Found in the middle of a kyanite seam pinched in on all sides. Took some careful work and time, but was well worth the effort! ; Close ups of the same specimen......ahhhhh..beautiful! ; ; More hematite on kyanite! ; ; ;

VERY sweet stuff! You've got an awesome array of some of my favorite material from Graves Mountain. That last one was obviously worth every minute of the time you spent carefully extracting it. Nice to see something that incredible come out of the ground intact.

Thanks Steve! Now if I can get down to one of those famous amethyst/smokey digs at Diamond Hill I will have more pretty colors for my collection. Tracey, if you come to the October dig, look me up. I don't mind helping folks at all. Matter of fact, I always give away more than I keep and will be happy to show you some good places to dig.
