So I only got off a few shots before the camera died ecton copper related minerals. My girlfriend found an awsome botroydial (sp?) plate of malachite. No photo proof, and I actually dont know where the rest of my ecton stuff is, I guess I never unpacked it when I moved but here is one piece I had around. Here are just a few of the pyros I've collected. I just actaully found a promising uncleaned piece. Ill get photos soon. It could be one of the best yet ya never know. palm sized crystal with "pryo termination" lol botroydal a few mo' Palm sized quartz plate with pyro coating Beryl Farctured but terminated schorl from a housing developement. Schorl from a different locality. the large golden Beryl I posted earlier when I said I wasnt even looking for it was from this area.\ BERYL! and than the camera died.. so I'll get more when I get back from swimming!!!! Too hot today!

Well, it sure is hot as hell here (I'm in Bethlehem PA, BTW) so the pool is a good idea. Looking forward to seeing some more pics! I'd love to "trade locations" but I'm really new to this so I only know of a couple around here and they are most likely well known.

Those beryls are pretty darn nice looking and the tourmalines aren't bad either! Thanks very much for all the pics from your collection, jbeckert. I love the fact that they all come from Pennsylvania. Very Nice. You guys are finding some great stuff up there. Thanks for all the pics.
Looks like Pennsylvania's got way more nice rocks than Maryland, huh? ;D

I've never seen that last Smedley, it looks really nice. The one nice one I found up there is about that diameter but half that length. I'd go again if you want to.

Pete, I think the guys name is John Smedley. He was an avid PA collector. In between Media and Springfield PA they named a county park after him. Coincidently (sp) there happens to be a major peg running through the park in an area far back in the park. Whether or not they knew of this when they made the park? who knows? There are small flourescent apatites in the peg and... Beryls! Like any peg, its tough work. Since Lawrence has been there I have honed my skills and sense of locating beryls from the makeup up the peg. However, to me, a more interesting fact is that recently this has been a new locality for andalusite. Nowhere near the beryl spot. I think maybe a handful of people know of this. One being one of my mentors. This is a spot I can show you easily, and within a half hours drive in any direction there are plenty of other mineral locations as well. Also a museum of natural history in Media which showcases a large variety of Delaware county minerals, PA minerals, and world minerals. This may or may not be a place you want to visit with me, but my mentor is the curator of the mineral room in the museum! Ive got a close look "behind the scenes aka basement" as well. Which I may be able to coax him into letting a group of us down there if there are not too many of us.
Also, I just got a buddy into collecting. He apparently visited Franklin and sterling hill today. He said he had a blast and was wondering if I knew any other spots. I dont know many but I said I may know some people that do. I was curious to find out if I can give him your email or phone number? Just wanted to run it by you first. I think hes about a 20min drive NE of montclair/ patterson area. In morris county or morrisville, Im not sure. Any help with my newly budding mineral collecting friend would be greatly apreciated. Let me know or just PM me some of your contact info.
I dont know how you guys are in the heat. Im taking a trip early august that will require me to work most weekends until then for financial reasons. After that I'm down to scheduel weekend trips with whoever may be interested.

Pete I'd rather not give out my address randomly on the internet, but I will say I'm close to Liberty High School and Moravian College in Bethlehem. North of the Old Bethlehem Steel, part of which is now Sands Casino. Aaron

Aaron, I am the same way about posting my address on the net. As you can see I did leave it a little vague as to my exact location. Anyway PM me and I will give you my phone number and maybe we can meet up some night and we can see each others collections trade notes etc. We could also see about putting a trip together to UNS, my quartz spot etc. We could see about getting Greg and Jeff to meet up as well.

This is a book alert for all you Pa. rockhounds- "The Mines and Minerals of Chester County, Pennsylvania " by Ronald J. Sloto. At $35.00, the book is a steal....full of history, mine diagrams, and maps, maps, maps. Lots of photos including color plates. I'll have our copy at the roundup (leaving tonight!) Rob and Vicki

^^ Thanks. I just met up with Ron in St Petes to talk about some collecting and pick up my copy in person and get a signed copy cause someday it will end up like Gordons Mineralogy of Pennsylvania. Out of print, hard to find etc. Anyone not familiar with St. Petes, this is the locality of a large diabase/granite quarry. Also the site of the infamous French Creek Iron mines. Anyway, Its an overwhelming book. He works for the USGS which is exactly the kind of job any of us would love. It took him 35 years of searching, collecting, researching and mapping out plots to write that book. A steal indeed. Being that I live in chester county, and have for 17 years now, my jaw dropped when I saw this 2"+ thick book. Im not sure what I expected, but this was above and beyond. I havent put it down since I got it. The girlfriend is getting a little "meh" about all this reading.
Im happy that he left out a few secret spots. Not sure if Bryon Brookmeyer or Roger Mitchell had anything to do with this.
Anyhow.... Pete I was wondering if that was cool about my friend and all or if you were just talking to Aaron?

Pete: Thanks for the offer, I'd love to go! Unfortunately I work Sunday. In fact, this is the second 7 day work week in a row for me. When all is said and done it will be 19 straight days of work. Both weekends are 12 hour days in addition to the normal 8 hour week days.
That is also why I haven't had time to post here much. When this marathon of work is over and I finally (hopefully) get a day off I'll be more than happy to go on a trip and learn some more. Next time I go I'm definitely going to bring a notebook, labels, and a pen so i can write down and label specimens. I've already forgotten several of the names of minerals Anthony had so graciously shown me (sorry man I wish I would have had something to write with and on at UNS).
I'll let you know when my next day off is. Hopefully we can work something out then. Have fun and good luck on Sunday!
Aaron

I might actually get Sunday off ...besides I need to make up for Wednesday when i caught the bug in the giant 6 foot long pocket .. Basically I caught some type of contact dermatitis crawling around an old pocket with stagnant water ... I never itched so much in my life ..It was immediate and lasted about 7 hours ..I will never go back in there unless iam in a full white suit !!! My rockhounding lasted 15 minutes and 45 min drive there and back to the shower ... let me try this again ... I was at Sterling last Sunday ..JBeckert ... Maybe I ran into him ..You can also give him my name if hes joined the forum . but I took the 2 hour tour for my first time and I absolutely loved the mineral collection Especially the back of the museum in the long glass wall ... I highly recommend it to anyone... good thing was it rained and they gave me 15 minutes to recollect the world pile after the rain which is so much easier than dry ... especially when your looking for agates ...

Aaron, Just let me know when you can go. As of now I am pretty flexible. I will be more than happy to go again anytime. Sorry you can't make Sunday. I will be in touch.
Greg, Just drop me a line if you can make it Sunday. Still don't know where I am going. Leaning toward UNS but no firm decision yet. We can work out the details if you can make it.

Jeff, Aaron, You guys are making me jealous. All this talk of work, work, work!!!!!!! I am UE and would love to have the problems you guys are. Anyway I am doing UNS on Sunday, early in the am. Out by 1-2. Will be cool till then. especially if I can get there by 8-9.
So the next time you guys are free give a shout and lets put a local trip together. I am up for anything. You guys and Greg come my way I come your way to spots you know. Whatever. Its all good as long as I get to move some rock and dirt. I will always come up with something wherever I go collect.

Man, I've missed a lot, eh? Loving those PA minerals, though it's hard to give the sites a try when I have no idea where they are Had a nasty bug running through the computer for a while. Finally gave in and trashed everything, then re-installed windows. Back in action now, though. Haven't made it up to UNS in a while, though. I've had to remove all of my rockhounding gear from my car and place it in my storage unit so I could move some of my larger reptile tanks around. Hoping to be back at it soon, though. Hasn't stopped my from visiting my favorite fossil sites in Monmouth County, though.
