cut my first cab yesterday, out of a nice piece of rhodochrosite. Had a tough time getting a polish due to its softness, a 12000 grit diamond wheel dry seemed to give a better shine than cerium on felt, so I left it at that. Going to a lovely lady as a birthday present.

Hey great job on that! Rhodo is kinda challenging to cut, being delicate and somewhat difficult to get a great polish on.
I like the all diamond approach too, it works well on almost anything. Save the cerium for quartz and the few things that need it, it keeps the mess and dust down.

Congratulations, tortuga! It's always a great feeling to get that first one under your belt and Rhodo is a beautiful stone. Many Happy More to you, Joe
