I'm not sure I understand why every agate in the world needs to have a separate name. There are literally a million different varietal patterns, do we really need a millions different names for one type of quartz? It's very pretty, I like it a lot, but it's just agate. Am I the only one who feels this way?

you're not the only one content with "agate", but i'm sure there are more of us out there who are more curious and desire more detail in our rocks.

Actually, no, we don't need millions of names for agates.
Most agates these days seemingly are newly named by dealers who want to up the cost of the agates they bring to the table.
Check the internet and you'll see the same agate christened four different ways, and it's redundant and confusing for the general folk.
But, if there is a name to an agate, then it does provide a location and therefore a provenance that otherwise might be lacking. I personally like knowing where my agates come from. I find agates that don't have a location tied to them (they don't need a 'name') don't hold as much interest. I guess that because part of my desire to collect comes from wanting to display - which lead directly to the Agate Index I'm trying to piece together.
So, needs a name? Heck no. Some of them get kinda silly anyways. But if it does have a name, it's nice to know so I can know more about the agate I hold in my hand.
As for this piece, there's a lot going on, but there's not enough to get a full picture, at least for me. The colors are crazy lace like, but there's none of the patterns.
So - how'd you get it? Rock shop? Friend? Neighbor? Where are you located? etc.

I have always figured agate should be place named first, then any descriptive, witty, or marketing monikers tagged on the end.
That being said I know little about accepted nomenclature for agate. I have a bunch that are really nice but I would love to know the locales. When I have time to photograph them I will leak them out on here slowly for assistance from the specialists.

it seems the consensus from other locations is that this piece may be some kind of laguna lace with a non-standard pattern. thoughts on that?
