I don't know what it is but it looks like a fossilized mushroom cap.

Better late than never, betty. I'd have to venture the guess that you have already said what it is. A very pretty and symmetrically water worn rock. I pick them up all the time and use them in washed areas of my walkway. It is probably mostly some kindof quartz, which is the reason it has lasted this long. Quartz and quartzite are pretty durable. And then if you add another mineral or two to the mix, you have a rock. I like it too! Joe

Betty, I have two small marble sized stones that resemble yours. They have white, brown and black, with a look of dendritic agate, (which is still a type of quartz), and were found already smooth. I believe you also have an agate river pebble. Hope this helps.
