Just curious as a Marylander--are you sure it's agate and not Williamsite (gem serpentine)? As a cutter I'm sure you felt the hardness of the material, but I've seen some extremely nice gem serpentine with dissipated chromite in it that looked a LOT like that material.

Yeah the gemmy stuff looks like chrome diopside or more likely dioptase. Could be some odd form of chrysoprase but who knows...

my bad ! I guess that my head was confused by the 18 inches of snow from last night. Chromian enstatite, a chrome-rich variety of enstatite (MgSiO2), has a hardness of 5.5 to 6 and specific gravity of 3.1 to 3.3, and occurs as orthorhombic crystals with similar emerald-green color as chromian diopside. Both chrome diopside and enstatite have well-developed cleavage and parting, which unfortunately limits the size of facetable material. Enstatite produces crystals with square cross-sections when viewed down the c-axis of the crystal and diopside will have a similar cross-section with one pair of crystal surfaces that are inclined to the all other crystal faces. Whatever the constituency, that is some flat gorgeous material. I believe I really, really need a fixed blade with that on it.

doesn't look like any agate I've seen, seems to be a sedimentary jasper with iron and nickel or chrome. any idea where its from? reminds me of China
