Mickey
That is a beautiful stone. I know DH has generated some nice material so I am not surprised to see such a quality cut stone being produced. Thanks for sharing this pictures.

That awesome! DOnt see many DH pieces! I've got a small handful of extra nice & gemmy DH amethyst that I've been holding on to get cut. If anyone wants to cut some, I'll pay you to do it. Sorry, but I dont have enough top quality material to do a trade out for any of it but wouldnt mind paying top dollar to get it cut. PM me if you can do it or know someone.

I am cutting a piece of DH right now. With permission, when I finish, I will post a pic. It is in the transfer rig right now.

Mickey, Very nice piece, love that dark purple. That's true, I haven't seen much about DH pieces being cut, mostly from JXR, though DH has produced a lot of purple in the last couple of years. gsellis, I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the one you're working on right now, once you've got it finished

gsellis, I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the one you're working on right now, once you've got it finished I really like the DH to cut vs JXR at the moment. This is based on a sample of 1, so "grain of salt". As far as I see, the piece I have is IF. No bubbles, cracks. Some color zoning, but that should be 'blend' through the magic of RI. Not dark purple like some JXR pieces, but JXR is not all dark purple either. I think I will get it closer to complete tonight. I know the owner will like it. ;D

This stone with my eyes is clean, but under a loop there are lots of bubbles and inclusions. George as well as everyone else, please post your photos of DH stones. I was also wondering if anyone had cabbed some of the amethyst from DH. I never tire of looking at beautiful rocks whether they are natural or have been manipulated by man.

Beautiful stone there Mickey, both in nature and in cut. Approximately how long does it take to facet and polish a stone? Thanks, kenn

Kenn, Of course it depends on the size of the stone and the type of cut. A normal size round brilliant takes about 3 hours; however, for me it takes about 4. (Another .5 hour if I want to split the mains) If you're not too concerned about meet points, you could crank them out even faster. On small stones, you can overcut the table and girdle facets really quickly. If this happens or the stone comes off the dop, then you have to recut and the time goes up. I'm still learning and have only done a few different type cuts, and they all have their little lessons to teach you. Some of you other folks could probably provide more information to Kenn than me.

Thanks Mickey. Actually, you provided the approx answer. A lot less time than I imagined. So far, my only experience with it all is tumbling, which of course takes daaaaays, or weeeeeeks. I didn't know in faceting, that the smoothing operation could be so quick. I enjoy learning and playing around with different arts and skills, and faceting has been one on my mind, but its cost is prohibitive to do just once or twice (unlike tumbling) I know some clubs have equipment that can be used, which might be a way to go now that I know it doesn't take daaaaays and weeeeeeks. Thanks again. Kenn

Kenn, I could take this thread way off track. If you want to know how fast, Johnny Tew did one in 24 minutes as a demo. I have video of discussing how on Youtube in 3 parts. Search for gsellis in Youtube and there are some videos from the Franklin Faceter's Frolic 2.

I am going to try and get a better picture today, but this was my quickie pic of the stone I just finished. 14.9cts. And it is a consistant light purple, which does not show in the pic.

Beautiful and very clean stone George. Also, I love Johnny Tew's machine in the video. Wish I had one like that. Look forward to your next picture. Have you posted your photography methods on here. Mine definitely needs some help.

Sigh... Amethyst is the hardest thing to photograph and get the color right. I tried with a second 500w light with no diffuser and in the sun with nothing really better.
