Just moved here from Wilmington, NC where I lived for 25+ years. Been anxious to get somewhere where the land is not flat, the leaves turn color, it snows at least once a year and there are rocks to be found. So far, so good.
I hope to get setup to do some basic lapidary work - tumbling and maybe a flat lap.
Plan to join up on some area digs - joined MAGMA (or at least sent an email asking to join.)
Love to learn more about the geology of the Uwharrie area and do some digs.
Plan to visit and chat with anyone close enough to work with to see what you have and what I can learn.
Glad to meet everone and hope to get active and raise my knowledge level soon.

Welcome to the board. This is a great place to learn and explore with great folks to assist you in your hobby and all interests and fascinations with rocks. Come on out to a dig!
We have lots of members in that part of NC too.
I think you could call yourself a member of MAGMA now. You may also choose to become a Platinum member for a nominal fee or there may even be a Lifetime membership now. Either way, you get to go to exclusive digs and receive discounts at various places. Happy Hunting! Rebecca

Thanks for the welcome. Yes, I will probably join MAGMA as a platinum member just before or around a dig event. I am glad there are members here from around my area. It was a main reason for me to join - to pick up on local knowledge, participate in some digs and meet the people.
Right now, I am working on learning the local geology and am amazed at what I may be able to discover in my own backyard. The forums have been great help and I appreciate all the tips and photos that people share.
Thnaks again and I look forward to meeting everyone that I can at the digs and shows.

If you're willing to roam the southeast on a quest for rocks and gems, keep an eye on this board and the "Upcoming Events" announcements on the MAGMA section of the www.wncrocks.com website. We go to some of the best collecting areas that are open to rockhounds, and anyone is welcome to join us when we do. Hanging out with seasoned collectors, you'll pick up a lot of tips on how to find hidden treasures, how to properly extract them without damage and how to clean and protect them once you get them home. You'll also probably meet people from your area who will eventually begin to show their little "honey holes"….places where they're finding interesting material but for one reason or another can't accommodate a large group. Although some of the sites we visits are free, many times there is a small fee charged for access to sites we go to. That is because they are usually on private land and the owners want to be compensated for allowing a bunch of us to dig on their property. As many people on this board can attest to, you'll end up being amazed at the collection you'll begin to build. When you walk into a lot of our homes, it looks like you've just entered a museum. And, more than a few of us actually have had some of our finds displayed in museums so that the public can enjoy seeing them too. Come play in the dirt with us. It's great fun, and you'll learn a lot in a short amount of time.

Yes, I plan to watch the MAGMA events and I see the next dig is Graves Mountain in Georgia on January 22nd & 23rd. I'd love to go but that one is a bit out of my travel range for a first time event. I just don't have a thing to wear ;D The Bessemer City event on March 6th looks like a better possibility and I will try to make that one. Till then, I guess I'll look for places to scratch around in the dirt around here. Thanks everyone.
