That's a Classic alright. And I love the backdrop. Nice Find! I would love to see some of the chert you say you have a mountain of in your backyard. If you have baseball size pieces on the surface, maybe you just need to get a little 'deeper' for some bigger pieces? I know some diggers....... Joe

Here's an average cobble, it varies in color from cream to brown and dark black. It's from Greenbrier co. WV, and part of the Hillsdale outcropping. They recently started a subdivision that quickly went under and there are chert cobbles everywhere for the picking. There's got to be some big pieces, just haven't found em yet. Attachments:

Dang Man, that's some pretty stuff! You go ahead and stockpile as much as you can and I'll be up as soon as the snow melts. ;D Some of those pieces are big enough. Going to send you a PM.

You are REALLY not that far away for many of us here in N.C.!! How about a field trip for some of that chert when the snow recedes?

You are REALLY not that far away for many of us here in N.C.!! How about a field trip for some of that chert when the snow recedes? I didn't realize how many fellow knappers were here. Glad I stumbled into this site. I'm lucky to live in a area that is rich in lithic materials. I learned at a local archaeology society meeting that the natives in my area had so much material to choose from that they were picky about what they worked with. Chert / flint is relatively easy to find here, most of the creeks and rivers here are full of various cobbles and larger rocks. I don't know about a field trip but I'd be willing to take any interested in gathering material say one at a time. I plan on accumulating some surplus of this chert in the spring to work with myself, and trade for authentic artifacts, and other lithic material. If interested, send me a pm. Regards, Ryan P.s. I'll post some more local material pics and some old artifacts I've found in the area soon.

Look forwards to that. I have quite a collection from Piedmont.
