Hello. We are new to this site and finally come across a rock that we haven't a clue. A little history, it came from the UP of Michigan. It has brilliant purples and greens and probably a 5 or 6 on the mohs scale. Can someone advise...

Since this is from the UP and the hardness is somewhat less than agate, I would postulate that it is an impure datolite nodule. The purer datolite nodules from this area are expensive and highly sought after, usually with a cream color with a pastel pink tint. This one seems to have various iron oxides swirled in with the datolite. Of course without seeing it in person I cannot be positive, but I have seen numerous of these nodules and yours is similar in many respects.

Thanks for the reply. FYI, it weighs about 4 pounds and is 6" by 5", it also has "agate faces" on it.
