been a while since posted anything good, been a busy year but slow in terms of rockhounding (although in process of cabbing a piece from Six S's). trying to get an ID on this one piece I have been cabbing out for the better half. Found this last year in an area where there is a lot schorl, schist, magnetite, etc. - this is the ONLY piece I have found, and that is after quite a bit of combing the area. The appearance changes depending on the angle viewed - deep shiny black in one view, in another silvery flashes from the composite striations running throughout (looks like a bunch of small rectangular pieces compressed like particle board). Streak test is light gray, hardness about a 6 or just slightly under, fairly light weight, takes a decent polish. unfinished back side to give an idea of the nature of the material: appreciate any feedback! Looks a lot like how a pyrite concreation from around here looks when cabbed up. Don't suppose there was a lot of dirty black when you cabbed it?

Looks like schorl to me. Look for rounded triangle shapes as these would be the c axis prism shapes that the tourmaline takes. We find masses of schorl that look just like that around here.

thanks for the feedback - my guess was that it is schorl, maybe some sort of conglomerated piece - we have lots of schorl crystals around here, and it streaks like schorl - like I said, not seen any pieces like this..

Well what the heck color IS the streak! Or is that a mystery too. And did it leave much color in your water when grinding, like Sask was asking? It looks like some sort of graphite and mica schist to me. Hardness 6, hmmm?

ooops! Streak test was a light grey color, which is pretty much what color the water turns when cabbing.

Try Hornblende (not an officially recognized mineral name), a dark green to black amphibole mineral. Hardness: 5-6 and Streak: brown to gray. Your piece looks like hornblende schist which is common in parts of ne Georgia.

First of all - Jason - !! You could of been helpful, but you have been so much more! Second - follow up on ncbbqnut's post - I think that is it - found several pics of hornblende that look very much like what I have, and all the other specs fit. Looks like he wins some bbq, although I don't cater!!
