I'm going to go out on a limb here and try not to offend anyone
But Jeepers Creepers Mr. Surfice, you and JohnP could go out
rockhounding one morning and have the whole bed of a truck
filled by noon!
But that's the way we learn. That's the way we all learn and
continue to learn as we come to terms with this obsession.
One thing that is hard to tell sometimes when looking for 'red'
rocks is what is a mineral and what is just 'iron-staining' that has
leached into the rock. Like Pic 1, way at the top, appears to be
quartz stained with iron.
Now Pic 2 is something you are looking for. That's a piece of
pegmatite with a layer of biotite mica on top. That's what you
are going thru at the Crabtree Mine looking for emeralds. All kinds
of good minerals ie; garnet, tourmaline, beryl, form in pegmatites.
Sometimes you just take a 4 lb crack hammer and bust them open
to see if anything good falls out.
Pic 3 could be another piece of pegmatite. I can't tell for sure
from the pic what the black is?
Pic 5 & 6 Chalcedony?
Pic 7 Biotite mica doodad. Comes from a peg like in Pic 2.
Sometimes there will be a garnet or a beryl inside those lumps.
Pics 11 & 12 are of a nice piece of crystaline smokey? quartz w/
some white stuff stuck in a crack that has been seriously water
worn.
Can't say anything about the group pics of red rocks. It would be
nice if some of those are rubies, but just guessing, prepare
yourself for alot of iron staining going on.
Like Pics 1-4 of your second group of pics. I may not be seeing
it right but that looks like regular old massive quartz rock that
has a rind of iron stain on it.
Your last 3 pics may be something. Have to get a better look at
that last piece.
Sorry if this isn't much help. It's pretty much guess work trying to
go from pics, but since you went to the trouble to post so many
I thought I would give it a shot.
You just got to look at these rocks over and over again until you
recognize them. So keep on hunting!
