As I live in an area with near to nil chance of finding interesting gemstones, I've wondered whether the advertised "gem gravels" from hot spots like Montana would yield anything? The cynic in me suspects people will simply sell low-yield gravel they have already picked over. Has anybody here had a good experience? Thanks!

Check under the thread "treasures from franklin" under MINETALK. Those are from a montana sapphire gravel pack.

Thanks for the info...wow, I saw those but did not realize they came from a gravel pack. I now see you posted that...any company you would like to recommend? Thanks!

Kurts, There is a post on the Montana Sapphires you may be interested in. dirtyrockhounds.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=Gem&action=display&thread=3749&page=1#26369It is fun to get material from mail order. In the winter months I have ordered gold bearing dirt, gem buckets and sapphires laden material. I am usually not disappointed but don't expect that they made a mistake and left in a valuable/large stone. Not sure where you live but I thought Ohio was a 'dead zone' for minerals and fossils when I moved up here , and I am pleasantly surprised with the variety and amounts of collecting possible with only a short drive from where I live. You may want to see if there are any gem/minerail/fossil clubs in your area, they probably go collecting once and a while. good luck and have fun...

Once when I had just fallen off the turnip truck I bought some dirt that Elvis had walked on:)

Bammer, thanks for the link--that's very interesting and in the least a fun diversion as I now have extra time. To be sure, there are places to find fossils and minerals here, but it's quite sporadic. However, the other day I stumbled across some corundum at an old mine site--not gemstone quality, but I'm still surprised.

As an update, I ordered some gravel from a Montana mine. This first order amounts to some 50 lbs...which should keep me busy for a while LOL. I'll post pics of anything good I find. ;D
