If not for arappaho I wouldn't have developed an interest in finding these. And these are all of whole ones (for the most part) I have found since he got me into it. I have many broken ones.

I just noticed this post too. That is an awesome collection of whole points for just beginning. They look really old. Did Joe date them? What is the material of the top row: last 3 and bottom row: last 2? i always love finding the clear quartz ones....or any ones.

Considering I've not found any points like that, that is an awesome collection to me! How old are such things?

Rebecca,
those all appear to be rhyolite, a VERY common rock and knapping material in the "slate belt" of NC. Pretty much from the Uwharrie mountiains, east to central Chatham county, and extending north and south as well.
When it's freshly dug it is usually a darker green/gray/black color, but can be all varieties from yellowish tan, to whitish gray, pretty pea green, to the dark stuff. However, when exposed to the elements for thousands of years, it weathers to a very light grayish green. The majority of artifacts in this area are rhylolite, more quartz as you trend east towards the coast. I'm sure with given time, arrapaho will correct and/or expand on this.
Keep it Soulive! (ha!)

Yeah! for me....I have learned so much from this board and people in this club...i recognized that as rhyolite, but wasn't sure. Hey! Soulive is playing in charlotte in october. no where else in the south so far...would love to see them..again. i am hoping they might pick up some more dates maybe in asheville. the last time i saw them was the orange peel with one of the neville bros (name escapes me right now). For ya'll that don't know Soulive, you better ask somebody!

Well, Rock On! ;D Dave, you've been paying attention at those Knap-Ins! Just to answer that age old question; All those points fall in the Archaic Period, 2000 BC - 8000 BC. The 3 in top row that look alike are called Morrow Mountain type and date to 4000 BC. The quartz one is probably a small Sav. River, 2000 BC, and the oldest one is the bottom right, a Rowan, coming in somewhere between 6000-8000 BC. And they're getting older everyday. Joe
