Black Tourmaline or Biotite(mica). Tough to tell on such a small piece.

it is not soft,tried picking at it with a needle does have some sparkle to it, found another chunk of rock with the same stuff on it but it is too big for me to pick up.I will try to go back and get some pix of it

Probably an iron coating deposited on the quartz. Some sort of hematite also with manganese.

went back and looked at the bigger piece and it does appear to be some sort of "coating" found a similar piece with red staining. I know there is a lot of iron here as some people have problems with their well water. Kenneth
