think it may be peridot, but not sure. Found it in a creek bed last weekend - wall section that exposed several layers, at the bottom was a large decomposed feldspar layer. Never found anything in it before, but this time noticed a small green vein. Dug into it, several of these pieces popped out: they are pretty small, crumble easy - the crystals have an elongated structure, which I haven't seen before. Anyway, thought it was neat and wanted to share. any chance it is something other than peridot?

Hey Nose2ground,
The elongated crystal structure and olive drab green coloration indicate that it may be epidote. It is usually found associated with the feldspar species group. That would be my guess.

well I think you are right - checked out some pics of epidote based upon your reply, looks to be it. Now, if I can find a nice large crystal of it! You've earned yourself a plate of my BBQ if you ever get down this way.

I'll take you up on the offer. I lived in Atlanta for 24 years before moving back to NC, and I ate some mighty fine bbq down there. Heavy's south of Crawfordville is a must stop, and his place is a real museum. Heavy was a real nice guy, but don't know if he is still alive or if the restaurant is still open.
Keep digging for more specimens of the epidote. Some really great crystals in albite came from near Bakersville in Mitchell Co., NC about 30-40 years ago. if I get the chance I'll post a picture of my specimen from that locality.

Erik - found at my dad's farm, just in Murrayville. Still need to get together with you at some point.
as for the bbq, I usually make my own - but will see if I can locate the place nc is talking about!
