I am not to familiar with Geodes so i was wondering if someone could ID some of the mins in this geode that I got in a trade from a guy from Missouri.\ The whole thing This blueish/silvery stuff. It seems to have a pearly luster and striations that run lengthwise(sorry can't see well because of light reflection, look at 1st or 3rd pic for better view)) This is quartz I know This pale yellow stuff seems sort of translucent but there is no good crystal habit This off white stuff. it seems to blend in with the quartz but it has a pyramidial crystal shape where as the quartz in this is of course a prismatic shape and I can see the M faces on some of the quartz crystals. All 4 in one shot Any suggestions? Bluish stuff? off white stuff? pale yellow stuff?

Barite and dolomite maybe? I know these minerals are common in geodes from around there. Just a thought as I know very little about geodes.

Barite and dolomite. Yea, the off white stuff(cream) could just be dolomite. I think you might be right, lawrence.

The bluish crystal looks like celestite. (?) Either way, that is a great specimen. I love combinations like that.

Hi ...guy, Ok, you definately have some quartz crystals (most of the rind of the geode and some pointing inward. Then thing get to be a lot more difficult. Barite and dolomite are possibilities, then thinking in the carbonates (if there was a hydrothermal injection of material) you could also have calcite and or gypsum in there. Again, as I have said before, mineral identification from pictures is fraught with error.

Hard to tell, this is just a guess... Bluish/Silver one looks like gypsum (selenite)... the off-white looks like dolemite or calcite... nice piece, it's a shame you can't see inside before the cut is made! Drew

Jason, the yellow and white are both forms of calcite. The silvery is selenite and the clear is quartz. Damammy agrees with me on this. She is the geode queen. Ken

Jason
Good specimen. Selenite( blue) Calcite (clear) Calcite (yellow) probably dissolution of Pyrite crystals stained the calcite
Easier to identify when it is in my hand.

Cool thanks for the post Sean. Sean is the newest DRM member and hopefully MAGMA member. His specialty is geodes. I have never met anybody more knowledgeable on geodes. When he moved to Atlanta not to long ago he left thousands upon thousands of pounds of perfectly good geodes at the old homestead in Illinois. To many to fit in the moving van. Damn you gotta hate when that happens. Hopefully you can make the next MAGMA fieldtrip(other than Kentucky).
