found this earlier today on lunch break while collecting some limonite cubes - looked like a chunk of sandstone, but when looked closer saw green coming through. Whacked it with my rock pick to see what was inside (who said rockhounding could not be a contact sport) - and it had a lot of very shiny miniscule green crystals thorughout. Darker sections are likely iron deposits - anyone have an idea what this might be? (streak is white).

for the heck of it, throwing in a pic of the limonite after pyrite that I got today also - had broke this one open to expose the pyrite, noticed this had what appears to be some garnet inside (towards bottom right side):

The tiny green crystals should be epidote. Rick B

thanks fellas - will look both of those up and see. I will say this - that was one solid rock for what appeared to be a sandstone. I'll see what it does once I get my grinder gear replaced.

I believe Rick is on the money. It looks like a piece of dunite, which is composed of olivine and other minerals, and contains iron (the reason for the nice iron oxide coating). I've seen tons of it at Buck Creek. Nice specimen.

Dunite? I definitely need to look that up. Is it something that can be cabbed?

Could be olivine, some mining did take place in n. hall and jackson co. Found that as an aside note on a book on asbestos and soapstone mining in georgia.

you're right - I have that book "bookmarked" and forgot about that - thanks! I'm still curious, though, about the red corundum that was found in Gainesville that was mentioned in one of those old texts

do tell.. looking for any company??
fyi - I lease my office from a realtor, spoke with him recently about any properties he has for sale in the northern counties of Georgia that are situated on creeks/rivers that he would not mind me prospecting on - said he has a couple, so will be letting some of you locals know once I get word back from him ;D (considering that some of the streams have yielded sapphires and such).

My dad's family were all from around Commerce and I remember lots of quartz in the woods when we went to visit there every year. Unfortunately all the old folks are dead and the farms are no longer in the families. Last time I went through there it was really built up, but such is life. I would like to get a chance to roam around the area again though-so if a trip is planned try to let me in on it!!
