The main reason I don't post many of my artifactual latest finds,
is because I haven't been finding much worthy of posting lately.
( I am also worried that some of you will go blind trying to focus
on my photography! ;D)
Anyway, there were two new clearings for development in my
area that I have just been waiting for a good rain to check out.
It started raining Tuesday and let up alittle after noon on Wed.
So, by 2pm Wednesday afternoon I was out there checking it out.
I knew they wouldn't be working at the sites because it was too
muddy and I didn't want to get out there and be walking in
someone elses footprints.
The first site is where they are widening a two lane road to four
and are starting at the bridge over a good sized creek not far
from where it flows into the Neuse River. On the other side of this
2-lane road is a great spot that all the local collectors have
known about for years, so I had high hopes for finding mass quantities of artifacts. Pic 1.
So I was surprised and a little disappointed when this was all I
found. One little crude, but whole, Guilford, a couple broken
pieces and parts, and some flakes. Maybe they need to go alittle
deeper, or maybe the Natives didn't cross the road much.
The other site is on a high ridge going thru our area. I didn't have
high hopes for this spot but it looked like it was worth checking.
As it turned out I was seeing as much,or more, than at the likely
looking spot. One whole Morrow Mtn, a broken Kirk or Palmer that
would've been SWEET whole, a quartz scraper, and flakes mostly
of the same material except for the one quartz crystal flake.
You never know until you look what you might find. When the
bulldozer goes in the waiting game begins. Will it rain before
they scrape all the dirt away?!?
But we've gotten alot of rain lately and there are always more
places to check.
Happy Hunting, Joe
