Hello to all, I am completely unexperienced when it comes to photographing (and collecting) minerals so please forgive me in advance! I live in Sanford, Maine and found this in my backyard about a year ago. The entire specimen is about 2 inches wide and tall. The crystals are somewhat dirty due to my fear of breaking them. Any ideas? Quartz Crystals?

A good place to start is to go to Mindat.org and do a locality search for Sanford. There are quite a few minerals known from Sanford, Maine. If you're lucky there may be a good photo posted that looks similar to your specimen. Just look at the top of the mineral list for the link to the photo gallery for that locality. We'd still love to see your photo. Check out the General Forum for instructions on how to upload photos to this site.

Quartz. Best bet there is something called a pegmatite in your area. Most of the pegmatite belt is north of you, but that doesn't mean you couldn't have some that far south.
There are also some metals mines not too far away from you. Look up Maine mineralogy on the net for starters.
