Found these yesterday within a foot of each other. I'm wondering if the stone is a spall from which the point was worked. Also not familiar with this type of stone. First time I've come across type. The point is 2" long and 1" wide. The edges seem to be as sharp as when first knapped. Any ideas? Thanks. Larry

Nice Finds, Larry! I'm stumped on what to call the point and what the material is tho. Sure looks like they are the same material. Which makes for a really good question to try and solve, ie; Are these pieces native to NC or were they brought here? Figuring out the point type and where it's from could tell us what the material is, or the other way around. Identify the material and possibly figure out who was using it. I'd really like to call them both something local, but the point just doesn't seem to fit anything perfectly. The retouched almost beveled edges of the point and the flaring rounded base are traits I can't match up with anything NC. We're going to have to some research! One good concise page on NC point typology is: www.arch.dcr.state.nc.us/uwharrie/oliver25.htmlAnd another point typology site to browse, you mayalready know, members.aol.com/artgumbus/lithic.htmlAnd keep your eye out for any more of that material. Thanks, Joe. Now that we got some rain yesterday I'm going to check the area specifically looking for that material. Larry

So no ones got an idea on an ID for either of these pieces yet?! I'm still looking at these two, Larry. Have you found anymore of this material? I sure would like to know what it is and where it came from. As far as the point goes, I've been looking at the Greenbriar and the southeastern Hardin, but those are both very old types and, for some reason, I don't think it's 'that' old. I'm thinking someone from TN or AL could identify this point.

Nope, Joe. Haven't found any more of that material. Not even any flakes. Checked with several locals who have extensive collections and none of them could identify the material. I've got a geologist son-in-law and he's stumped also. I'll keep scratching around and keep my eyes open. Thanks. Larry
