Found south of Lordsburg, NM, near "old Hachita" ghost town. Sorry, no size reference, piece is about 2"x2"

hard to say based on the pic focus and angle - but looks like etchings going across it - not sure what to make of the coloration on the right top edge either. Have you found pot shards in that locale before, or other artifacts? Do you have any experience with terra cotta pottery?
To be honest, I would never have known what we have here if my spousal unit had not ID'd it - she used to do a lot of pottery work and recognized it immediately. The pieces in this section of the US (Georgia) often have various lines going across - not sure about NM. Right off hand, I would suspect "yes".

Admittedly, the photo is a little hard to make out. I have seen similar ridging on shards of Anasazi pottery made by the coiling method.

I agree with Arappho. A pic of the reverse side or a shot of the edge would be helpful just to see if and what type of temper was used. The chevron design could be some type of paddled imprint....??
