I have this feeling that this is something of interest. The rock is a mica schist found with a perfect cylindrical hole in the middle. I can't imagine that nature put it there. I was found in a flood plain in Henderson county only a few hundred feet from the pisgah forest. Any suggestions?

Well, suggestions is all I got. It could be a bead preform that got dropped on the way from the Hole Drilling Dept. on its' way to the Grinding and Finishing Dept. But I just don't know. You could bring it in to the archs at Warren Wilson and see what they have to say about it. And, if you have the time, I would love to see a pic of the other side. The way this side is broken around the hole it looks like the pressure was being applied from the other side. Just curious. But I agree with you, I can think of nothing in Nature that would cause this.

I agree with arappaho. It looks like it was done from the other side. It kinda looks like a bullet hole..........maybe.

This is the back of the specimen. To me it looks like someone drilled it from one direction. Like a firestarter made from rock. Or a tool made to hold one end of a stick.

Hey ezra, I like jpolks bullethole idea, but for now I'd have to agree with you on it being a drilled hole. If it is you should be able to see, with magnification, the drill tool marks in the sides of the hole. And now that I look at the piece again, it looks like a sherd from a broken stone bowl. Broken bowl sherds were often reused to make all sorts of objects like fishing weights and ornaments. It's hard to say from a picture. You are going to have to get someone to take a close look at it.

Or maybe the end cap for a drill ir fire stick that either wore through or finally broke through. Most of the end caps I've seen were rounded to fit the hand but who knows? I like Joe's idea of the possibility that it could be a stone bowl sherd. Anyway - nice find. Larry
