I can not tell if this is a rock or a fossil. It has a hardness between an 8 and a 9 and I do not have any rocks that will scratch it. What has me stumped is that under it there appears to be a mouth. It looks like there are scales around what appears to be the mouth. Because of the hardness I think it could be corrundum of some sort. It is about 2 1/2 " long by 1 1/2" high. Any ideas ? www.flickr.com/photos/doctibbles/Sorry about the external site but I can't seem to upload the pics to this site.

Try the "How to post photos" thread n the general forum, it always works for me, but everyones computer is different so I know how it goes. As far as the rock goes, scratch tests are hard to do, quartz is notoriously crumbly if you are using that as an indicator. I bet it is an agate, or maybe chert or jasper, rocks are so hard to id from pics. Does the rock feel greasy, sticky, etc? Heavy?
The wildlife pictures are unreal, you should work for Natl. Geographic if you took those!

Not sure what it is but the easiest way to post a picture that I know is to use photobucket photobucket.com/they give you the link to paste in on the "Albums & Upload" section. Just look for a screen like this then click on the "IMG Code" and paste it into your post. I was using Flicker until I found this out.

It resembles a tumbled crystalline granite. Perhaps rolled, dragged and stressed by glacier actions. The cracks and crevices could be coincidental in their resemblence to mouth and eyes where crystals have been forced out of the parent pebble. Surface scars from other glacial material could form somewhat circular patterns resembling scales. Nice photos!
