Lawrence, This stone turned out quite nice. It does, however, have one flaw, a feather on one side. The material you gave me was pretty fractured, but I was able to cut-out all but the one feather. The crystal tip was a yellowish-smokey color when I started cutting. The cut I used lightens the color a bit and when I took it off the dop and cleaned it, all of the smokyness had all but vanished and a very light amethyst color, very much like Rose of France, was manifested. It is a 14mm round briliant (low-boy variant), weighing in at 8 cts on the nose. It exibits small amounts of light purple and pink tones as you rotate it! I think your girlfriend will really like this. It is extremely bright...almost 90% light return. Jeff ;D

Jeff, That looks awesome! I gave Katherine the link to check it out. I'm sure she will be VERY pleased with the outcome as I am, too. That's gonna make one HELL of a cocktail ring if you ask me. Now, just have to go and help her pick out a setting...no expenses spared...!
Also, for those of you who want to know the source, a buddy and I collected a few hundred amethyst, citrine, ametrine, and smoky quartz crystals and scepters at Peterson Mountain, aka Hallelujah Junction, in California.
Thanks for looking, Lawrence
P.S. Jeff, let's go collecting when I get back to Baltimore!

Lawrence,
I have a number of places to check out when you get back.
I've never had a piece change color like that. I wish I had a before photo, because the change in color is so pronounced. There was NO hint of purple before it was cut.
Jeff

Jeff, Katherine loves it! She said it was a wonderful Christmas gift to pull up the link and show it to her family while opening presents. Can't wait to see it!
