4.6 cts 8 main round brilliant, mounted in a sterling silver setting. This is from a point Fiona collected in the summer at JXR during the last MAGMA trip. There is a small fault in the pavillion, but the stone still looks nice! ;D Jeff

Nice! How's Fiona doing these days? She sure seemed to be having a good time digging at Jackson's Crossroads on the last trip there. I still have a picture of her in my mind, sitting in a hole in a dump pile, laughing as she pulled out one amethyst specimen after another.
I had no idea she was getting into stuff that would facet so nicely. So tell the truth, Jeff.....does she get to keep the ring, or do you?

She gets it! Steve she found a few thousand carets of material that day (and night ;D) and I've just starting going through it to see what can be faceted. I think I'm going to try and facet it all by the next round-up and bring the JXR collection with me.

Nice work, Jeff! What size rough did it start out as to get that yield?

Woo Hoo Fiona! Jeff she is so lucky to have a Dad like you who can cut all her finds. You will have to teach her how or you will have a full time job cutting her finds. Just joking I know you are no slouch either LOL

Dave,
I started with approximatley 10 cts and cut away almost all of the faults and feathers. There is one small one left, mostly in the pavillion.
And Cathy.....that isn't even the nice dark, purple/red stuff she found! I have one piece on display that has the red flash running through it and I can't bring myself to cut it.

so how big of a piece would ten carats be? I have a couple of pieces that aren't greatly dark but might work for faceting as the clarity is decent. I just don't know if they are big enough to get a ring-size stone out of. I want to make something for my daughter, from amethyst I found. Need someone to facet tho. Know anyone? ;D b

Hey Becky, 10 carats is equal to 2 grams. Ok, probably not too helpful. I would guesstimate that 10 carats is probably around the size of a marble. In general, when you cut a stone you are going to end up with a finished gem that is maybe 20 - 30% of your starting size. For Jeff to have gotten 4.8 out of it, the rough must have started out fairly close to the design shape to begin with because this yield is not the norm.
For a ring, I think you'll find 1 - 2 carats a nice size. So that would mean like a 5 - 10 ct piece of rough to start. Sorry, don't mean to sound authoritative because I am not. But this is just my 2 cents from doing this for 6 months :-)

:oWe all know that rockhounds don't have any sense. And when Gronkus says...that just his 2 cents worth....well I think we should change the way we say that. From now on instead of thats my 2 cents worth I think we should say...that's my 2 carats worth...LOL ;D Pat

Dave, Your right. 1-2 cts is a good size for a ring. I'm just a big person who like big stones! ;D I usually don't cut less than 2 ct sized stones....too hard on the eyes and too small for my snausage-sized fingers. ;D I lost about 40% of the stone...it was the right size and shape for a nice round brilliant. ;DNot everything that comes out of JXR is facet grade. Some of the crystals can make some of the most interesting wire wrapped pendents that have a little bit of oddity to them. This one has a X crossed crystal laying on top of another one. The back side has a negative impression on it with time lines. It also has a wonderful window that goes all the way through it but my camera can't get that. It also has rainbows. When I found this one it was a mess it had broken off of the matrix and the back side was a jumble of jagged edges. I ground it down smooth and polished the back and then wrapped to accent the various angles. Hope you like the pictures. Pat The negative is in the bottom right side of this picture.

Amethyst is such a beautiful stone--in the rough, cabbed, wrapped, faceted. This has been a wonderful thread--fun to look at and informative, too!
Thanks.
