This and other rocks are being used for beach erosion around the bridge onto the island where I live. This piece is greener that it shows here. Thanks, fredda

It looks like it could be serpentinite, probably from Rockville Quarry in Montgomery County. It may even be trap rock from one of the Norrhern Virginia quarries.

Trap rock is another name used for basalt. It is commonly used for rip rap and channel linings.

Steve, you beat me to it! Fredda, The lighter colored material is probably calcite, or it could even be very light colored prehinite if its from the N. Va. location. The railroad I work for uses alot of the NVa material, and some serpentinite for rail-yard ballast and other railbed related building projects. Jeff
