"Found" these in a salted bucket in May and still cannot ID them. They are much harder than calcite; won't take a scratch from a steel blade. They have distinct rectangular crystal protrusions/inclusions throughout the stones, similar to what I have seen on beryls. Your help is appreciated. Lady B

I agree with Jim, they look like calcite...
Drop a few drops of diluted hydrochloric acid on it to see if it fizzes...

Carnelian is my guess. We have gotten some of it in our gem buckets also.

Hard to say without better pics , or , direct examination . I kinda' doubt calcite , as I do not see any telltale rhombic cleavage . It could very possibly be carnelian , as there is what appears to be a common center where some of the crystal faces originate from , often seen in agates/chalcedony varieties . Then again , I could be wrong.

i wanted to say calcedony, but the crystal look in the middle had me.

Looks like a garden variety Calcite. When I was in college on a field trip I collected many different varieties of calcite. I have several samples of the orange variety.
Carnelian is a quartz species and doesn't have a crystal structure. I can plainly see a crystal on one stone. If you don't have HCl, if a nail scratches it, hardness of 5, it's probably calcite.

It is a Calcite from Chihuahua, Mexico that has been acid washed to give it a sheen. Comes in a green color also.

Looks like Calcite to me. Try some dilute hydrochlotric acid (10%). If it fizzes - Calcite.
