Here's something I found on the beach in North Carolina: Does anyone know what it is or how it was formed? It's about 5" x 7" or so.

It also looks like the coquina that you can collect off the shore at Ft. Fisher. Either way, I vote for Limestone of some sort.

This is a moldic limestone. The fossils (Aragonitic shell material) have been leached out and has left just the lime mud (Calcite). There is probably some small calcite crystals lining the cavities. Probably from one of the local Tertiary limestones from SC. Put some acid (weak hydrochloric (10%)) and see if it fizzes. Limestone (calcite) will fizz.
