Kewl documentary on The Science Channel-- "Hot Rocks: Geology of Civilization". Saw it this morning (4-5-07) but no doubt it'll repeat many times. The gist was basically "geology meets ancient art", in terms of how artists, from the first cave painters through ancient Egyptians , up to Van Gogh, used minerals to derive the colors in their paints. A bit of chemistry, a bit of geology, and a bit of art history--- when, where, & how did ancient painters move beyond reds & ochres, to greens, and later, to the first blues? How did the Egyptians use a chemical process to turn malachite blue, for their paintings? Etc. Good stuff. Well done, lots of beautiful footage of rock walls, paintings, etc.

Hi Sam,
Thanks for the heads up about this documentary. I'll watch out for it. Sounds like a "must see" for my art club kids.
