Hi all. I am a contractor and project manager for Prairie Home Developments from Saskatchewan Canada. I had my first taste in rockhounding over 30 years ago, but was inactive for the past 25 years. My activity has been renewed and I look forward to meeting new people and finding more rocks.

Hi Brent
Wondering what types of rocks you find in your area?

We have mostly granite, quartz, feldspar mixes and other common rock. We do have some agates but they are rare. We can find dendritic dolomite, usually in pieces only a few ounces in size. As a province, we have diamonds, gold, uranium, fossils, and potash. I did find a dendritic dolomite that is about 16"X24"X4" thick. A very rare find. Rockhounding isn't very big in my area.

I am near Yorkton. I would imagine there is more to find by Estevan.

I actually would have thought more by Yorkton to be honest. For interesting stuff around Estevan I have found Agate (Montana/Souris type), Jasper, Epodite, Petrified wood, Pyrite, Selinite (just individual crystals but I have been told desert roses can be found) and some shell fossils. So Its not terrible here. I mainly look at a old gravel pit and in the coal mine dumps. Where have you been looking? If you haven't heard of it you might want to try the Souris rock pit, I got some nice things there, but not actually a lot different from around Estevan. www.sourisrockshop.com/rockpit%20info.htmOr stop by Estevan some time it would be nice to have someone to collect with, most of my friends look at me like I'm nuts when I say I'm going rock collecting.

It could be that we don't see what is right under our own feet and our neighbors always have the good stuff...lol. I didn't think of it, but the band of Montana agate would run close to you. I collected Montana agate around Sidney Montana when I was 13. I will keep Estevan in mind for a trip this spring.
