Hi, all. Just discovered this place. I am from NW Washington and an avid rockhound. Do a vast amount of fieldtripping in the NW states and Canada. Don't do much with my finds, keep saying that when I get too old to fieldtrip I will learn to facet and silversmith. I do know how to cab and tumble!!
I look forward to discussing favorite collecting sites, seeing favorite finds and telling campfire stories with all here.
Basket
P.S. Yes, another hobby is weaving traditional baskets with cedar bark, roots and grasses and reeds. Mostly Makah and Tlingit cultural styles.

Welcome basket,
I'm glad you found the site and I look forward as I'm sure all do in hearing your stories and accounts. I've never made out to washington state but heard of some great trip reports from others. Thanks for joining the site and I'll talk to you later.

Hey Basket: I lived in Ore and Wash for 30 years before coming to Japan. I studied archaeology when I was a univ. student with an emphasis on Pac. NW Indian cultures, especially the coastal tribes. Sounds like we have a lot in common. Over 20 years ago I took a course in Aboriginal Life Styles at the Malheur Field Station in SE Oregon near Steens Mt. (My all time-bar none-favorite place in the world!!). It's the same course that had Jean Auel who subsequently wrote Clan of the Cave Bear, and the other Earth's Children books. We became a hunter/gatherer clan and headed out into the desert country along a nice stream. We made baskets, shelters, made plant fiber twines for fishing and snares, dug biscuitroot and wild onions, and cooked on flat stones and made rock ovens. Tools were shaped from abundant obsidian in the area. I make cedar bark twine here in Japan to show how the twisted rope patterns were shaped in the stone age Jomon pottery found in this area. When I'm with my birdwatching group at stream or lake sides, I'll often do impromptu sessions in making small baskets out of reeds etc. They enjoy it a lot. So do I.

I'm new to this place too, still not sure what all the smiley faces are about. I'm in Kamloops, BC. Not too far from WA. Started my own site, www.members.shaw.ca/myrocks/ -nothing for sale, just some pics, hope to get more interesting over time....
