Hello from the Sonoran Desert! I live and collect in Arizona primarily. I have a large number of things to trade and would be interested in seeing what comes from the other side of the country. For a decent collection of photos download and unrar this file--http://www.megaupload.com/?d=RDJVAD89. If you don't have unrar software you can download 7-Zip freeware from several locations after a quick google search.

Check my other posts for some photos. Most of my pictures are 3 megs or larger (I like detailed pictures). I downsized a few for some other topics and you can see some wulfenite with cerrusite on druzy and some limonite after pyrite with quartz, andradite garnet, and hematite. If I get time next week I'll shrink a few more and stick them in here somewhere. I'm out of town till Monday.

If you have a program to unrar the file and have hi-speed internet it should only take you about ten minutes to have about two hundred high-quality photos. The url again is: www.megaupload.com/?d=RDJVAD89

I agree with bogus. I have never heard of unrar, whatever that is. I'm so dumb, I cant load a pix. I am also on dial up and it takes an hour just to download the field trip pictures. download speed is 5k. POST SOME PIX if you want to really trade with us. Ken

I just checked it again and it still takes you directly to the Megaupload site. If you're not familiar with it here are some directions: Type the code into the box at the upper right hand and hit return. It will do a 45 second countdown. When it says "Download" in the box click it and choose the location to load the file. After it downloads (approx 236 megs) open the documents page where it's located. Right-click on the icon which should be named "Rockhounded" and choose your unrar program. If you do not yet have such a program, google "7-zip" and download this freeware application from any number of sites. After you install the program, right click on the file icon "Rockhounded" and choose the 7-zip application and then "extract here". In about a minute or two you will have a file with around two hundred photos to look at.

Most people I've communicated with online are respectful and kind. Blaming me for your technological incompetence or incapability only makes me feel sorry for you. I've told you where to look on this forum for some of my photos. I've also told you when I would load some more. The only "Bogus" thing in this thread are the people who are not paying attention.

The link is to a file host, unrar is a .rar file extension that requires a particular program to open not unlike .zip and such.
Genchaos, you must consider that not everyone has access to specialty programs. You make it more difficult for some. Like Ken said POST the photos.

Thanks for the clarification DigDug. I agree that not everyone might be familiar with such things. Now please count down to the third post which begins "Check my other posts..." Thank you.

Ok... to summarize... Genchaos has some pics in a compressed file (rar)... the pics are big, like 3MB apiece (that's 30 minutes a pic for you dialuppers) in order to see detail. He is not interested in compressing these pics to post here (if he used my varcockhounder pic posting utility, it would not allow him to post them! Besides, even if he could, everyone would complain that they aren't sized correctly...). He is interested in people downloading his compressed file (rar) and checking out his specimens to see if they want to trade. The compressed file is big by any standards, broadband or dialup, but as mentioned before the pictures are detailed. Point blank... If you don't want to download his compressed rar file, then DON'T! Personally, I will be downloading the file and check out his pictures, although I am not sure he would want to trade anything with me! Drew

Hi guys. Back from the weekend. To see additional posts made by anyone on the forum you simply have to click on their name. For example, when you click on DigDug I can see that most of his recent posts have been to this thread, but he has also posted under "If you were going to Franklin" and "Thank you MAGMA". If you want to go back farther you just change the number in the box after the word "View". When you click "Submit" it will give you a page full of all the recent posts made by that one user. In my case, if you click on "genchaos" and then hit "Submit" it should bring up any pictures I've posted in my last ten posts. That should get all of them because I'm still a newbie here.
As to who I choose to trade with, I don't care how ugly you are as long as you've got some extra pieces in your collection. I'm just looking for something new. Thanks guys.

I've added a large number of photos to "Latest Finds". You can either skip over there or click on "genchaos". I'll try to find time to shrink some more down later. Let me emphasize that the pictures you'll see only cover my last couple of trips out. Let me know what you think.

Genchaos sent me some fluorescent minerals that were real nice. The fluorite glows a purple/white like the English kind does and the calcite glows a nice deep red. Plus there are some other colors of minerals mixed in. If you collect fluorescents then you may want to do some trading to add to your collection.

I have downloaded the pics and there is a nice variety of material to veiw.I have also been in contact with Genchaos about trading. We talked about what we were both interested in.After discussion he loaded a box with the material I liked and shipped it right out.I got the box the day before I went on vacation so I was only able to take a quick look.I got back Sunday night late but yesterday (monday) I finally got a chance to drag out my beloved rocksaw. The material I got from him is incredible. Being into lapidary I was mainly interested in cabable stuff. But he has alot of display material too.I had him send me serpentine thats lime green with black streaks, crysocola and malachite in matrix, superstition marble, and a piece of crazy lace agate thats way too big for my 10 inch saw.Plus he threw in a few pieces of stuff I did'nt even ask for. I sliced up some of all of the above except the lace of corse.Every piece is really purty.Iwill get many killer cabs. I didn't have any problem downloading the pics.I already had winrar on my pc so it was easy.I know that it takes alot of hard drive to do but it can be deleted after its been used.In my opinion it was well worth it. Getting the great material that I ended up with. In time I'm sure that I will be doing some more trading with Andy (Genchaos's name) again. Thanks Andy for some great stuff and I'm looking forward to trading some more with you.

Thanks, guys. I have been able to hook up with several people so far and have enjoyed meeting every single one. If there is anyone else out there who would like to get their hands on some decent Arizona stuff, let me know. The more, the merrier.

I got a package of assorted pieces from Andy and I am very happy with them-beautiful stuff! I will try and post some of the cabs I do from the malachite and agate pieces. Ed's favorite is the gold ore piece-of course!

Most everyone I've heard from seems to be more interested in lapidary materials than anything else. Here are some pictures showing a little chrysocolla, malachite, and linarite. I brought back the above Moday. Primarily it consists of chrysocolla and malachite in barite and rhyolite. Below is some linarite (dark blue). The picture above and the one below show some chrysocolla with wulfenite. This is NOT lapidary quality, only a crust on the surface of the matrix. Sure is pretty, though. The following shots show some good quality stuff with high silica content.

This is some of the lace agate I have. This stuff is mine alone. I make the trip about once every three years to get more at the risk of life, limb, and transmission. I'm not saying there isn't more lace agate elsewhere in the Arizona desert, I'm just saying you won't see any from this location. The source is in Pinal County. Something that makes it unique is the bizarre chalcedony formation on the surface. It flows in one direction, rather than randomly, and looks more like stalagmites.

If anyone is interested I will try and remember to bring some polished pieces of the lapidary pieces to JXR so you can see how they come out and maybe do some swapping with Andy.
So far the consensus is girls like the linarite and malachite and the guys like the agate. I love them all!
Love the bizarre chalcedony piece.

I think a lot of the people peeking in on this thread are under the impression that I'm either stuck-up or that I'm expecting AAA grade material for trade. I promise that neither is true (though I won't turn down top-grade material. ) This is just a great opportunity to see what other people are finding without spending more than postage. For me, it's a great excuse to work off my ever-expanding gut in the raging Arizona sun. Why spend the airfare or gas money to travel all the way out here and get lost in the desert. Let me be your excuse for avoiding heat-stroke, rattlesnake bites, scorpion stings, raging herds of rabid javelina--you know, the usual. Of course, if you're heading this way anyway, let me know and I'll point the way to some sweet spots. The gas is expensive, but the sunburn's for free. (We're just barely getting to 110 oF.)

THANK YOU, ANDY!!!!! (smiling) We received the box you sent to us in trade and the girls and I spent some time unwrapping everything you had so carefully packed for us, oohing and ahhing over all the material.. WOW! Thank you for the diversity of mineral specimens that you chose to send. They are really wonderful! I am working on getting your box together and will send by the end of the week.
Thank you again,
Leah
Everyone...I would strongly encourage you to participate with Andy in trading specimens if you have enjoyed seeing his posted pics. When he offered to trade with me, I didn't think that I would have material from many localities to offer him in return. However, he assured me that he is willing to trade for what you have...minerals or fossils. It is a great way to see new minerals or different habits of minerals that are already known to you.

I got my box earlier this week and today was the first chance I had to get a good look at everything in the sunlight. Absolutely beautiful! I don't know what the mystery stone is that you sent but I love it. I agree it does look like chrysocolla but I don't know what the dark purple spots are. I haven't seen that one before. The linarite is wonderful, even better than the pics. My son is having fun doing the rorschact test with the serpentine and I'm having to smack his hands to keep them out of the pet wood. I don't want it all to wind up in his rock collection.
I'm going to have a lot of fun working with this stuff. Thanks again!

I'm glad everyone's having fun. I've received some great specimens and have had a blast getting to know some of you. I have received a lot of questions from various folks about what I'm willing to accept in trade based on location, specimen type, or if I have already received some. I am willing to trade for nearly anything and I sure haven't received too much of any one thing. Every piece has been unique and interesting. So far everyone has really gotten into the spirit of this and I haven't been disappointed by anyone, nor do I think anyone has been disappointed by what they received. I changed the heading on this post to read "ANY trades", and hopefully this will encourage even more to join the fun.
