I am new to the Dirty Rockhound forum and there is a lot of knowledge in these pages. I have been collecting only about two years. I got started because of my grandson. I have some nice finds but more questions than I can ask. There are so many sub-classifications that it gets very confusing. The feldspar group is one example.
One question: I have some nice garnets collected from a primo source and I don't know how to properly clean them. Should one polish them or leave them as "found in the ground" state. They are not in matrix. They seem to be soft until a good deal of the matrix is peeled off and then they lose their crystal shape. Is this common? They are so dark that light does not penetrate them. If left in matrix, would it be wise to use a dremmel to expose the facets of the garnet? thanks
