I found this rock formation buried in a sandy hillside. It is very fragile and i can break it just by squeezing it. I would say the hardness is about a 2. Inside are a very soft powdery crystal formations. thanks for the help. Attachments:

It could be (a sand/clay cemented by) calcite. Try to apply some acid (e.g. vinegar). Does it "boil up"? If not - may be hypsum.
Is "very soft powdery crystal formation" soluble in water? If yes - see haloids, nitrates, borates, Na/Mg sulphates...
